Release form

Polyoxidonium comes in three forms.

These include:

• semi-cylindrical or round tablets;
• lyophilisate for injections and external use – a whitish mass, has a slight yellowish tint, porous;
• rectal / vaginal suppositories (candles) – they have a bullet-shaped form of a yellowish tint, their consistency is homogeneous, there is no air core.

Pharmacological action of the drug, can it be taken to increase immunity?

The drug activates the body’s own defenses in a non-specific way. It helps in the fight against various infectious and inflammatory pathologies.

The medicine has the following effects:

1. Anti-inflammatory – the active substance of the drug is able to bind, neutralize, and remove toxic substances that are produced by pathogenic microorganisms.
2. Immunomodulatory – the drug is able to stimulate the activity of phagocytes and natural killer T-cells. These cells recognize, devour and destroy foreign bacteria. It stimulates the production of antibodies and increases the rate of formation of interferons (gamma, alpha).
3. Antioxidant – blocks the release of free radicals. They appear in the process of inflammation during the decay of affected tissues.
4. Detoxifying – the substance is able to bind and inactivate toxic substances. Then, in a bound state, they are excreted from the body.

The drug has a complex effect on the patient’s body. These features distinguish it from the entire group of immunomodulating agents. The active substance increases the resistance of tissues in relation to local and generalized infections.

Pharmacokinetics

Azoximer bromide is classified as a hydrophilic substance. When taken orally, the active substance is actively absorbed in the digestive tract. The bioavailability of the drug is about 70% when taken in tablets.

If the medicine is used in the form of suppositories, then its bioavailability is more than 90%. After three hours, the drug, when taken orally, has the highest concentration in plasma, it is distributed in the tissues in thirty minutes.

After absorption, Polyoxidonium  is located in the intercellular substance. It is half excreted from the body in eighteen hours. The drug is excreted from the body mainly by the kidneys, decomposing to oligomers during hydrolysis. A small part is excreted through the gastrointestinal tract.

The drug is prescribed for children older than three years and adults. It is used for the prevention and treatment of infectious and inflammatory diseases during remissions and exacerbations.

For its treatment, antiviral  agents and immunomodulators are used. Polyoxidonium is used as part of the complex therapy of this viral disease. All forms of this drug are used.

In women with signs of HPV infection (warts in the genital area), a medicine is used in the form of vaginal suppositories. They can be used in the localization of formations in the region of the inguinal folds.
